What Your Stylist Wishes You’d Tell Them
There’s a moment that happens in almost every salon appointment. The stylist asks, “What are we doing today?” — and the guest says, “I don’t know, just a trim, I guess,” when what they actually mean is: I want something different but I’m not sure what, I’m worried about committing, and I really hope you can read my mind.
We can’t read minds. But we can have a real conversation — and that’s where the magic actually starts.
At Salon Enso, we believe the best results come from authentic relationships. That means we’re not just here to execute a service. We’re here to listen, to understand, and to help you get to something you genuinely love. To do that well, we need you to talk to us. Here’s what we wish more guests felt comfortable sharing.
Tell us what you actually want — even if you’re not sure how to say it.
You don’t need the right vocabulary. You don’t need to know the difference between balayage and babylights or understand what “face framing” means. You just need to tell us how you want to feel when you leave. Show us a photo. Use words like “warmer” or “softer” or “I want people to notice but not know why.” We’ll take it from there.
What we can’t work with is “whatever you think.” That puts us in the position of guessing — and your hair deserves better than a guess.
Tell us what you didn’t like last time.
This one feels awkward to say out loud, we know. But if something wasn’t quite right after your last appointment — here or anywhere — please tell us. Not to cast blame, but because that information is genuinely useful. “The layers felt too heavy” or “the color faded faster than I expected” gives us something to work with. Staying quiet means we might repeat the same thing.
We’re not here to be right. We’re here to get it right — for you.
Tell us about your life.
How much time do you actually spend on your hair in the morning? Do you work out daily? Are you about to go on a two-week vacation somewhere humid? Are you a mom of three who needs something that survives a school drop-off, a meeting, and a baseball game in the same day?
These things matter more than you’d think. The most beautiful cut in the world isn’t serving you if it needs 20 minutes of styling you don’t have. We want to give you something that works in your actual life, not just in the salon chair.
Tell us what you’ve done to your hair at home.
Box color. A trim. A deep conditioning treatment from the drugstore. An experiment that didn’t go quite the way you planned. We’re not here to judge any of it — we’ve seen it all, and we truly mean that. What we need is an accurate picture of what’s in your hair so we can make the right decisions about what to do next.
Surprises mid-service are the one thing that can limit what’s possible. Honesty upfront opens up options.
Tell us if something isn’t working — during the appointment.
If the water is too hot, the product is bothering you, or you’re second-guessing the direction we’re heading — say something. We would so much rather adjust in the moment than have you leave feeling unsure. Your comfort and your confidence matter to us, and we can’t protect either one if we don’t know.
Tell us your budget.
Color especially can vary significantly depending on what’s involved. If you’re working within a budget, let us know at the start. We can help you prioritize — maybe we focus on the pieces that make the biggest visual impact, or we find a maintenance approach that works over time. There’s almost always a path forward. We just need to know what we’re working with.
The bottom line.
Your stylist is genuinely on your side. We went into this career because we love what a great hair appointment can do for someone — not just how they look, but how they carry themselves when they walk out the door. That result is a collaboration. The more you bring to the conversation, the more we can bring to your hair.
So talk to us. We’re listening.
